Introduction

This tour aims to explore a forgotten page from the history of the Second World War: a page that has been neglected for more than seventy years. In fact, during the Italian Campaign, The German troops had selected the Sangro basin below the river bend at Alfedena as a natural bulwark in their defences, with support positioned on the northwestern side , in particular on the Maiella massif and on the hills sloping down towards the Adriatic Sea between the villages of Pennapiedimonte, Guardiagrele, Orsogna and Ortona. Perched on steep hills, these villages made for ideal defensive points, with their low stone buildings and narrow streets. Under hard condition of weather and terrain, the British paratroopers forged an “unexpected alliance” with the partisans from Group of Civitella Messer Raimondo, who supported, sheltered and protected them along the German Gustav Line.
