Introduction

Gessopalena, Altino and Castle of Roccascalegna
Award - Winning Project Abruzzo Open Day Summer 2017: The Castles on the Aventino River

Escorted Tour through history, nature, food and more of the Sangro – Aventino River Valleys.

Itineray - Friday, June 2, 2017

In the early morning, the gathering of the participants is arranged at the designated point and time. Accommodation in our well - equipped tourist coaches and leaving towards the fascinating Sangro - Aventino Valleys.

The first stand envisages the visit to the ancient hamlet of Gessopalena. This little village is placed on a ridge of rock, and it's famous for the geological setting of the ground on which the town has been raised. The main constituent of the terrain is the gypsum, from which Gessopalena takes its name. The participants are invited to visit the local Museum of Gypsum, in which they will be able to discover how the ancient citizens used this soft sulfate mineral to build their houses and its importance in the local economy and commercial activity. The recent history tells us the key role played by Gessopalena during WWII: its dominant position was selected by the German troops as a stronghold in their chain of defensive system and field works. Following the same path, we accompany the participants to discover the ancient hamlet heavily damaged during war and the site of the German massacre of Sant'Agata. In fact, on 21st January 1944, forty - two people were burned alive by a group of German soldiers: they were only women, children and elderly.

After visiting Gessopalena, the trip continues to the village of Altino, best known as the site of the sweet pepper: this class of Abruzzese cusine is of superior quality. With the support of “Associazione di Tutela del Peperone Dolce di Altino – Oasi di Serranella”, a local association charged to protecting this typical and genuine product of the Abruzzo agriculture. Moreover, this association brings the participants to visit the museum dedicated to the sweet pepper and Abruzzese cuisine, and, alongside the staff of RibAltino wine shop, arranges a sweet pepper - based lunch to the guests.

In the afternoon, bus transfer to the medieval town of Roccascalegna and its legendary Castle. Made also famous by Tale of Tales, a film directed by Matteo Garrone, this fortress is an iconic site of Abruzzo. Thanks to the local association, the participants get the opportunity to visit the Castle and to enjoy the typical Abruzzese cuisine - based buffet.

It's scheduled to depart at 09.00 pm, and the arrival to the designed points is estimated in late evening.
